Happy Valentine’s Day!
It wouldn’t be Valentine’s if we didn’t talk about love.
I started my romance movie marathon more than a week early. Last Friday, I stayed up until 2:30 the next morning, watching some fine British actors in the hilarious RomCom, Love Actually.
I would watch anything with Emma Thompson and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Oh yes, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley, along with the wonderful Allan Rickman. This fantastic cast did not disappoint.
I laughed—expected in a comedy, right? But when I laughed until I cried and then couldn’t figure out if I was crying because the scene was sad, or if I was still cracking up from the hilarity of the previous scene, I knew I had to purchase the movie. Now it’s on my must-watch-religiously list.
Now, if I were ever in doubt as to why I write romance—this movie reaffirms my obsession.
The plot looks at love from —oh wait—I was just about to write every angle. If that were true, I would still be watching.
The theme that leaps out at me is that love is all around. It’s everywhere. According to the writer, if you doubt that, or if you want some vicarious affection, head to your nearest airport. Go directly to the arrivals terminal and observe, like the proverbial fly on the wall. I suggest you choose a pillar close to the gate and watch the love that comes pouring out.
The movie’s theme is beautifully depicted. It splits in many directions like— how we mistake what love is. How we miss out on love. How we confuse love. How we trade one kind of love for another. How we replace love. And in my interpretation, how we con love. Yes, that’s right, I said con—or try to anyway.
Love Actually is hilarious, sweet, meaningful, fun, and like any good movie should do, it asks the question—what would you do?
Makes me curious about all you sophisticated readers. Have you seen this movie? What would you do? Pick any of the relationships and drop me a line. I would love to know what you would do, actually.
Now it’s time to turn the lights down low and treat your partner to a
night of . . . ahem . . . well you know the rest.
How about some recipes to set the mood!
